Stunning historic Dutch barge, Jonge Freerk, is looking for her next custodian. Built from riveted iron and steel in 1903 by two brothers in Sneek, Netherlands, she started life as a commercial sailing Skusje before being converted into a leisure boat in 1924 by renowned Dutch missionary, Father Freerk Kamma. Named for his son, Jonge Freerk has survived two world wars and is still going strong. Further details of the vessel's history can be found on the Dutch Barge Association database and the Dutch Historic list.
Jonge Freerk was extensively renovated in 2024 by her current owner. She had a full out of water hull inspection and was replated as required with 7mm steel. All below water waste vents were removed and plated over and she was fully blacked and had new anodes fitted by Butcher Marine. The front cabin was extended upwards to allow for extra head room, and she was fully painted above the waterline, with new double glazed windows fitted, 2 x Suntech 375 w solar panels added with 3 x new lithium 105AH Pylontech batteries, Victron 100/50 Smart MPPT Solar Controller fitted, new engine battery and starter motor, new fuel tank sender and gauge, as well as a new full set of bilge pumps installed. During this renovation, Jonge Freerk's interior was re-insulated and decorated and her bathroom modernised.
The vessel's layout includes a generous aft deck, with engine bay below and locker space for three gas bottles. Her metal canopy with canvas top and sides is removable to allow for access under low bridges. She has a traditional Tjalk tiller and rudder, and the transom seat also houses the engine and navigation controls. A varnished door with sliding hatch to starboard leads down into the open-plan reverse layout living space.
The galley to port features a full size gas cooker, microwave and sink with mixer taps. A new electric fridge bought in 2025, counter tops with cupboards and drawers below. A large, leaded amber glass window in the aft bulkhead casts a lovely ambient glow across the galley.
The Victron inverter and RCD switch board are located to starboard on the aft bulkhead and further forward is space for a small dining table and chairs.
The saloon comprises a sofa that folds out into a double bed for guests, a drinks table, chest of drawers, and a stylish rocking chair. There is plenty of storage with cupboards along both port and starboard cabin walls. A radiator and a Lockgate stainless drip feed kerosene stove provides additional heating to the ALDI gas central heating system. There are battery, 12 v and 240 v lighting options as well as Alexa ambient lighting in the saloon and bedroom.
Moving forward into a short corridor, a door to starboard leads to the modern and well presented bathroom with shower, basin with cupboard below, cassette toilet, and a large heated tower rail. The window is double glazed and opens, and is frosted for privacy.
The light and airy forecabin contains a double bed, central heating radiator, storage area with hanging rail, and the old mast step has been converted into a shelving unit. Lighting is provided by both 12v wall lights and a 240 v lantern light. There are 240 v sockets, and an oil filled radiator for any additional needs. Twin forward opening portholes provide extra light and ventilation as needed and there is a fully opening, lockable escape hatch giving access to the deck above.
Hot water is provided by calorifier via an immersion heater, and she comes complete with an extra solar panel to maintain the engine starter battery, as well as navigation lights, horn, fenders, ropes, anchors, pole, hooks, name plates and flag.
Jonge Freerk offers comfortable living space for two individuals and her historical significance and adaptable layout make her a valuable asset for those seeking a unique and functional home afloat.
Her Boat Safety Scheme certificate is valid until 16/05/2027
